Book Review: Brian Merriam’s “The Last Best Place” and “In The Mist”

Brian Merriam’s 28 page full color zine The Last Best Place documents a winter trip with old friends through the states of Montana and Wyoming. His lens captures the awe of the surreal rural landscapes he encounters, but much like the nature of life on the road – Merriam’s images are investigative, but distant – conveying a fragmented transcendental journey.

In The Mist is a collection of Merriam’s photographs from various geothermal areas throughout the Western United States. The 48 page full color perfect bound book is an entrancing meditation on the esoteric environment created by the natural phenomena of hot springs.
Brian Merriam spends time residing in Brooklyn where he has been for the last 8 years, as well as upstate New York, with his girlfriend and his dog Boris. You can view more of his work and purchase his publications here.
