Masculine investigates a range of masculine aesthetics and ethos through a selection of works by emerging and established photographers. Where the landscapes of Peter Croteau search for the natural sublime, Anne Hall’s horizon is a symbolic confrontation. The contorted metal and distressed colors in Nicolai Howalt's Car Crash Studies reveal an abstracted violence, while the stark contrasts of Anders Petersen’s black and white portraits expose a raw energy and vulnerability. As Collin LaFleche’s night scene captures the glowing flush of youth and attitude, Susan Surface’s adrenaline explodes in a series of self-portraits taken within an aggressive ritual.
The photographers featured carry individual and variant ideas of masculinity, sparking interplay, contradiction, and dialogue — while together constructing the Capricious Masculine.
