Photographer of the Week #152: Devante Hart

“My work is deeply concerned with the mother-son relationship. Through collaborating with my mother I document her essence as her health declines and as our home in Philadelphia begins to accumulate objects in its unkempt nature. In each object there is a story, a truth, and a trauma.”

Hart’s series “Don’t Leave Without”  intimately records images of their home and mother with an unflinching honesty that gently traces their daunting emotions. Urgent investigations of basement corners, bedroom closets, and dimly lit rooms illuminate cryptic hints of anxiety and loss. Presence and absence blur in midst of an expanse of belongings that represent the memories that once enlivened these spaces. Portraits of the artist and their mother quietly memorialize their fleeting closeness.
